TUESDAY, JANUARY 9, 1990

Technicians (Rental & Housing Rehab).:- good typing and math skills.
Some knowlege of real estate principles helpful. Some colle~
background would be necessary and preferably a degree in education,
social work, business administration and some counseling experience
would be beneficial. Classes related to these qualifications can be
taken at Patrick Henry Community College or Redford University and
other similar colleges.

Rehab Specialist/Inspector - knowledge of local and state building
codes, good math and drafting skills. Adequate construction
knowledge, including carpentry, plumbing, electrical, heating/air
conditioning. Ability to do cost-estimating. Most knowledge for this
position will come from experience on past jobs; however, some basic
skills can be obtained from specialized trade schools' On-the-Job
training opportunities are offered through workshops and seminars from
time-to-time.

Fire

All positions in the Fire Department require varying degrees of skills in
fire prevention and suppression. A great deal of training is required to
carry out the functions of a firefighter. It is recommended that persons
interested in employment as a firefighter enroll tn a county or clty
volunteer company whereby the needed knowledge and skills can be
obtained. Training and State certifications are provided by the Virginia
Department of Fire Programs. This- traialng is conducted on a Statewide
basis virtually every weekend somewhere in the State, and the cost is a
modest registration fee of $10 to $25. Patrick Henry Community College i~
in the process of offering a program that would result in a Fire Science
Certificate being given to those who successfully complete the program;
and Danville Community College, in .conjunction with Northern Virginia
Community College, is currently offering a two-year program for an
Associate Degree in Fire Science. Those taking advantage of these
opportunities will become better qualified and will therefore enhance
their employment opportunities in the Fire Department.

CONCLUS ION

In conclusion, I believe that almost ~11 the above stated required or
desired skills/qualifications are available through surrounding four-year
colleges, the local community college, National Business College, trade
schools, adult education classes or through appropriate volunteer groups.

The Personnel Office will further assist those interested in obtaining
the applicable skills or qualifications by displaying on the bulletin
board in the Personnel Office (Room 213) current class schedules from the
local community college and business college, as well as addresses of the
Board for Waterworks and Wastewater Works Operators, the Office of
Operator Training and Dtvtsion of Water Programs, along with any other
suggested resources which might be utilized by those Interested in
applying for Ctty jobs. In addttton,.the Piedmont Employment Consorttum
should be in a position of developing on-the-job training programs for
speciftc jobs in City government that could lead to permanent employment
by the City of those participating fn such a program.
