6

Water Resources

With the exception of several specialized and key supervisory positions,
employment opportunities in the Water Resources Department fall into three
main categories having employment criteria in each category as follows:

1. Water/Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator

A. Treatment Plant Operator License with 'some actual hands-on
experience in a treatment facility. This experience is also
required before a license can be obtained.

B. Treatment Plant Experience - Factors considered are type and size
of facility and duration of previous employment.

C. Education - strong educational backgrounds are becoming more
important as treatment technology and regulatory requirements
become more complex. College level courses in chemistry, biology,
math, and computers are particularly valuable and are available
through Patrick Henry Community College. A more specific
Environmental Studies curriculum is available through Ferrum
College. Information regarding correspondence courses and special
training classes' are available through the *State Water Control
Board and Virginia Department of Health, but most of these courses
are aimed at operators already employed working toward licenses.
College level treatment plant technology courses are taught in
community colleges in more heavily populated portions of the State,
but not locally for lack of sufficient numbers of participants.

Information on licensing and training may be obtained from the following:

Board of Waterworks and Wastewater Works Operators
Department of Commerce
3600 West Broad Street
Richmond, VA 23230-4917

*Office of Operator Training
Virginia State Water Control Board
2111 North Hamilton Street
Richmond, VA 23230

Division of Water Programs
State Department of Health
109 Governor Street
Richmond,.VA 23219
