4 <br /> TUESDAY, JANUARY 9, 1990 <br />These requirements vary somewhat throughout the organization; however, <br />these basic qualifications are desirable when filling any such positions. <br />Applicants should also have a high school education and preferably two <br />years or more of college training in these areas of work. Courses ~ra <br />offered at both Patrick Henry Community College and National Business <br />College for individuals having an interest in this category of employment <br />which would, if completed, improve the applicant's qualifications for <br />these positions and enhance their chances for filling any vacancies in <br />this job category. <br /> <br />Electric <br /> <br />The jobs and positions in this department range from almost professional <br />to skilled and semi-skilled. A great deal of technical knowledge 'of the <br />electric system and principles ar~ required to carry out the <br />responsibilities of Jobs in this department. A basic high-school <br />education or the equivalent and training is needed to meet the basic <br />requirementsof the positions in this department. Potential employees <br />should complete an industrial electronics course at Patrick Henry <br />Community College in order to be competitive in applying for the technical <br />Jobs in the Electric Department. Because of the nature of the work <br />involved, physical fitness is an important element in selection of <br />employees for this type work. On the job experience with electrical <br />contractors or other electric utility operations would greatly improve the <br />skills of those who wish to obtain employment in this department. ' <br /> <br />Police <br /> <br />The requirements for filling the various positions in the Polic~ <br />Department are becoming more stringent each year. Special consideration <br />is given to police officer applicants having a college degree in law <br />enforcement, psychology or sociology. Law enforcement programs are <br />available at Patrick Henry Community College, Danville Community College, <br />Averart College and Radford University. Consideration is given to <br />applicants who have an honorable discharge and two or more years military <br />experience. Participation of high school students between the ages of <br />16-20 in Boy Scouts of America Law Enforcement sponsored Explorer Post is <br />an advantage for those who wish to become police officers at a later time <br />in their lives. There is also a need for applicants to be physically fit <br />in order to perform the duties of a POlice OffiCer. Therefore, interested <br />applicants should take advantage of fitness programs. <br /> <br />Parks & Recreation <br /> <br />The jobs and positions in this department involve work with senior <br />citizens, clerical, recreational programs, park maintenance and <br />construction and related work. Training in gerontology for potential <br />employees interested in Senior Citizens activities is suggested to enhance <br />employment possibilities. Applicants interested in clerical positions <br />should possess general office skills which can be obtained through classes <br />at Patrick Henry Community College, National Business College, or through <br />adult education classes sponsored through the local high schools. A <br />knowledge of rules regarding various sports activities would be helpful to <br />all candidates for employment in this department. Experience or training <br />in construction and maintenance of parks and playground facilities would <br />benefit applicants interested in laborer positions in this department. <br />Participation in the overall recreation department program would help in <br />qualifying individuals for Jobs in the department. <br /> <br /> <br />
