TUESDAY, AUGUST 8, 1989 <br /> <br />A regular semi-monthly meeting of the Council of the City of Martinsville, <br />Virginia, with Mayor L. D. Oakes presiding, was held Tuesday, August 8, 1989, <br />in the Council Chamber, City Hall, beginning at 7:30 P.M. All members of <br />Council were present, viz., L. D. Oakes, Mayor; Clyde L. Williams, Vice~layor; <br />William C. Cole, Jr.; Alfred T. Groden; and Allan McClain. <br /> <br />After the invocation and the extending by Mayor Oakes of a cordial welcome to <br />visitors present, Council recognized--and presented a token of appreciation <br />to--Mr. Richard T. Perdue, who retired as of July 31, 1989, from the City's <br />employment as Automotive Shop Supervisor, after having worked for the City <br />almost thirty-three years. <br /> <br />Upon inquiry by Councilman Cole and upon the advice of City Attorney Worthy, <br />Council directed that, with regard to Council's action taken in regular meeting <br />held July 25, 1989, authorizing the advertising of a proposed gas franchise <br />ordinance, the minutes of that meeting and the authorizing action should not <br />have included the reference to Southwestern Virginia Gas Company but, rather, <br /> <br />the wording, " .... a proposed franchise ordinance granting the right to operate <br /> <br />a gas system" in Martinsville for a period of thirty years, beginning at the <br />expiration of the present franchise held by Southwestern Virginia Gas Company. <br />With that proviso, Council unanimously approved--as recorded--the minutes of <br />its said July 25th meeting. (Note: see MB pages Nos. 104 and 105.) <br /> <br />Upon recommendation of City Manager Brown, Council appropriated monies in the <br />following fund totals, pursuant to an itemized listing prepared by the City's <br /> <br />Department of Finance, to cover outstanding purchase orders and/or other <br /> <br />commitments/obligations as of June 30, 1989: <br /> <br /> <br />
