Miss Karen Doss, Kindergarten Teacher, School System; and
MEA President;
10. Mrs. Donna O'Neal, History Teacher, MartinsvilleHigh School;
11. Mr. John C. Matthews, 211 Arrowhead Trail;
12. Mrs. Jimmy (Carolyn S.) Brown, 131 Greyson Street;
13. Mr. Harry P. Varn, Jr., 714 Corn Tassel Trail; and
14. Mrs. Raymond F. (Brenda S.) Mallinak, 1006 River Forest Place.

Subject matters, comments, observations, and/or allegations during the course

of this public hearing are generally summarized, as follows:

By Mrs. Dyches
Teachers and principals are 'to be commended; SAT scores are too
low; some seventh graders can't read; more revenue is needed and
City Manager Brown has for five years cited this need; many
classes are too large; City is' going downhill if something is
not done; teacher morale is low; there is little student
motivation; among Junior High School and Senior High School
students there are serious emotional and drug problems; and (by
inference) parent-teacher groups are raising funds to purchase
needed equipment which the School Board will not or is unable to
purchase.

By Mr. Rhodes
The City's "Learning Disability" program is a good program and
should not be subjected to the risk of becoming less than a good
program, which he fears it might become with the School Board's
elimination of one "LD" teacher next year.

By Mrs. Gruettner
Questioned the decision by the School Board to eliminate a nurse
next year and to replace a teacher in computer training with an
aide; School Board's proposed "cuts" are not necessary; would
rather pay more taxes to support the local school system.

By Ms. Draper
Emphasized the value of program for four-year old children; does
not want reduction in computer training.

By Mrs. Coleman
Willing to pay more or higher local taxes to maintain good
school system.
