FRIDAY, APRIL 14, 1989 <br /> <br />eliminate 17.5 positions (12 being teachers) for 1989-90. The board's proposed <br />teacher salary scale for 1989-90 begins with $21,567.00 for holders of <br />Bachelor's Degrees and $24,100.00 for those with Master's Degrees with 0-to-2 <br />years' experience, and ends with $36,422.00 and $38,955.00, respectively, for <br />teachers with 37-or-more years of teaching experience. <br /> <br />After inquiring as to whether the School!Board might consider in its future <br />deliberations the closing of a school within the City, Councilman Cole <br />commended the School Board for its dedicated efforts toward quality education <br />for Martinsville's public school students and, at the same time, Mr. Cole <br />described criticism from some areas of the School Board's recommended 1989-90 <br />budget requests (reflecting the reduction in personnel hereinbefore cited) as <br />unwarranted; moreover, Mr. cole went on record as approving the School Board's <br />recommended 1989-90 budget, as presented. <br /> <br />In response to a request jointly presented by the City's Department of Social <br />Services (represented by Mr. William T. Moore, Board Chairman, and Mrs. Pat S. <br />Conrad, Director of the department), the Martinsville City School System <br />(represented by Mrs. William F. Stone, Jr., Board Member, and Dr. Larry J. <br />Kellogg, Administrative Assistant for Instruction), and the Patrick Henry Drug <br />& Alcohol Council (represented by its Director, Mr. James M. Tobin), Council <br />tentatively agreed to appropriate for one year only, i.e., for 1989-90, the sum <br />of $20,000.00 to help finance the jointly-sponsored Parents-and-Tots Together <br />Program for 1989-90 which will be operated by a $50,000.00 budget next year and <br />is designed to prepare children four-years-of-age for the beginning of public <br />school education. This progra~ and its benefits were supported by several <br />persons present, including Mr. Jan C. Reed, Director of Court Services for the <br /> <br /> <br />
