TUESDAY, JUNE 23, 1992 <br />duly seconded and by a vote of 3 "yes" and 1 "no" (Councilman Oakes), <br />Council approved the following Ordinance abandoning the street space: <br /> <br />BE IT ORDAINED by the Council of the City of Martinsville, <br />Virginia, in regular session assembled this twenty-third day <br />of June, 1992, that the street space, as described below, be- <br />-and is hereby declared--vacated and abandoned in favor of <br />Piedmont Construction Company and other adjacent property <br />owners, subject to payment to the City of one-half of the <br />assessed valuation of the property and the filing of an <br />appropriate map with--and the approval by--the City's Public <br />Works Director and/or the City's Director of Housing and <br />Community Development, showing the areas hereby declared <br />vacated and abandoned, which map, when and as approved, shall <br />be duly recorded in the office of the Clerk of Martinsville <br />City Circuit Court: <br /> <br />A 40-foot wide and approximately 448 foot long street <br />space running in a southeasterly direction and located <br />on the east side of Stephens Street approximately 1,030 <br />feet from the intersection of Stephens Street and South <br />Askin Street as shown on the City's Tax Map Section 50, <br />((10)) Block D, containing approximately 18,337 square <br />feet of land. <br /> <br />BE IT FURTHER ORDAINED by said Council that, an emergency <br />existing, this ordinance shall be in force on and after June <br />24, 1992. <br /> <br />Upon motion, duly seconded and by unanimous vote, Council reappointed <br />Judith Matthews, 211 Arrowhead Trail, to the Martinsville City School <br />Board for a 3-year term beginning July 1, 1992. <br /> <br />Upon motion, duly seconded and by unanimous vote, Council approved a <br />letter and the following Resolution opposing the Lake Gaston Pipeline <br />Project: <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the City of Virginia Beach, Virginia proposes to take 60 <br />million gallons per day from the flow of the waters of the Roanoke <br />River at the Pea Hill Creek tributary to Lake Gaston to provide water <br />for itself and other communities in the southeastern region of the <br />Commonwealth; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the General Assembly at its 1992 Session enacted House Bill <br />488 which allocated said 60 million gallons of water per day to the <br />City of Virginia Beach for the development of an additional public <br /> <br /> <br />
