104 <br /> <br /> TUESDAY, JUNE 9, 1992 <br /> <br /> A regular semi-monthly meeting of the Council of the City of <br /> Martinsville, Virginia, with Vice-Mayor Alfred T. Groden presiding, was <br /> held Tuesday, June 9, 1992, in the Council Chamber, City Hall, <br /> beginning at 9:30 A.M. The following members of Council were present: <br /> Alfred T. Groden, Vice-Mayor; George B. Adams, Jr.; L. D. Oakes; and <br /> Clyde L. Williams. Absent was Mayor Allan McClain, who was away from <br /> the City. <br /> <br />After the invocation, followed by Vice-Mayor Groden's cordial welcome <br />to visitors present, Council approved the minutes of its May 26, 1992 <br />meeting as circulated. <br /> <br />Council conducted a public hearing to receive applications for <br />membership on the City's School Board for a 3-year term beginning July <br />1, 1992. Vice-Mayor Groden noted that two individuals had indicated <br />interest in this position: Ms. Judith Matthews, 211 Arrowhead Trail <br />(seeking reappointment); and William Don Kerr, 901 Clarke Road. Dr. <br />Beth Baptist, 711 Beechnut Lane, and James H. Johnson, Jr., 1507 White <br />Oak Court, spoke in favor of Ms. Matthews' reappointment to the Board. <br />There being no other comments from anyone present, Vice-Mayor Groden <br />declared the public hearing closed. <br /> <br />In accordance with Section 2.1-344(A) of the CODE OF VIRGINIA (1950, <br />and as amended), and upon motion, duly seconded and by unanimous vote, <br />Council convened into Executive Session for the purpose of considering <br />an appointment to the School Board, as authorized by Subsection 1. At <br />the conclusion of this Executive Session, Council reconvened into <br />regular session, wherein, by a recorded vote, each member of Council <br />certified that (1) only public business matters exempted from open <br /> <br /> <br />
