TUESD~Yo NOVEMBER 23, 1993 <br /> <br />highway; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the jurisdictions along Route 220 South feel that a similar <br />Corridor Study is needed on the Route 220 Corridor from Roanoke to the <br />North Carolina line; now, therefore, <br /> <br />BE IT RESOLVED by the Council of the City of Martinsville, Virginia, in <br />regular session assembled November 23, 1993, that it does hereby urge <br />the Virginia Department of Transportation to conduct a Corridor Study <br />on Route 220 from Interstate 581 to the North Carolina State line for <br />the purpose of developing a specific plan and schedule for needed <br />improvements in order to upgrade this facility to the appropriate level <br />of service and safety to enhance economic development in Virginia in <br />the future; and <br /> <br />BE IT FURTHERRESOLVED, that all other local governing bodies, chambers <br />of commerce, economic development commissions and similar groups along <br />the corridor or in neighboring jurisdictions which are affected by the <br />ability of Route 220 to meet modern traffic needs are urged to do <br />likewise. <br /> <br />Upon motion, duly seconded and by unanimous vote, Council approved a <br />supplemental appropriation in the amount of $12,200 to the FY 93-94 <br />Water Fund budget in order to fund the emergency replacement of the <br />boiler which provides building heat to the City's Water Purification <br /> <br />Plant. Water Resources Director John Dyches explained the <br /> <br />appropriation would provide for replacement of the original 1948 unit <br />which is leaking and which would be expensive to repair. <br /> <br />Council acknowledged a financial report for the month ending 10/31/93. <br /> <br />Council considered a request by the Henry County Board of Supervisors <br />that the City ask the Martinsville School Board to cooperate with the <br />Henry County School Board in combining resources for special education <br />programs. Upon motion, duly seconded and by unanimous vote, Council <br />authorized the Mayor to sign a letter to the City School Board <br />requesting such cooperation. Councilman Oakes asked the letter contain <br />a suggestion that the two School Boards also consider combining <br />resources in the area of alternative education programs. <br /> <br /> <br />
