TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER t4,1993 <br /> <br />a means whereby the usage of the old R. P. Thomas trucking terminal on <br />Fayette Street by Environmental Transportation Services, a hauler of <br />hazardous waste, could be ended. Comments were as follows: (1) Rev. <br />Jimmie Hawkins, 408 Second Street, reviewed the comments made by <br />citizens at the August 24, 1993 public hearing on this matter and urged <br />Council to adopt the Ordinance as a "morally correct" action; (2) <br />William W. Edwards, 703 Second Street, stated he had spoken with two <br />sponsors of the State legislation which enabled the Council to adopt <br />the proposed Ordinance, and that they had told him it was their belief <br />that the Ordinance was enforceable; (3) Gloria Hylton, 402 Second <br />Street, presented a copy of a letter from Ms. Veronica Dancy, whom Ms. <br />Hylton stated was owner of property immediately adjacent to the old R. <br />P. Thomas trucking terminal, which supported adoption of the Ordinance; <br />(4) Rev. Bob Bailey, 1920 Dundee Lane, President of the Martinsville- <br />Henry County Ministerial Association, expressed appreciation to Council <br />for recognizing this as an important issue and stated the Ministerial <br />Association believes this matter is a moral issue which "supersedes the <br />legality"; (5) Joseph D. Finley, 1658 Roundabout Road, spoke in support <br />of the Ordinance; (6) Denise Wilson, 401 First Street, stated the <br />trucking terminal had not provided anything positive to the community; <br />(7) Gloria Hylton, 402 Second Street, held up an audio tape, <br />photographs, and a video tape which she stated demonstrated the <br />negative impact of the trucking terminal on the surrounding <br />neighborhood and reiterated her contention that this matter involves <br />"environmental racism"; and (8) Rev. Spencer Roberts, 413 Fayette <br />Street, stated he was encouraged by the patience of the citizens who <br />had brought their concerns to Council and that he would work against <br />elected officials who refuse to "do the right thing".
