TUESDAY, MAY 25, 1993 <br /> <br />A regular semi-monthly meeting of the Council of the City of <br />Martinsville, Virginia, with Vice-Mayor George B. Adams, Jr. presiding, <br />was held Tuesday, May 25, 1993 in the Council Chamber, City Hall, <br />beginning at 7:30 P.Mo The following members of Council were present: <br />George B. Adams, Jr., Vice-Mayor; Steve M. Draper; L. D. Oakes; and <br />Clyde L. Williams. Absent was Mayor Allan McClain who was away from <br />the City. <br /> <br />After the invocation followed by Vice-Mayor Adams' cordial welcome to <br />visitors present, Council approved the minutes of its meetings of May <br />4, 6, and 11, 1993 as circulated. <br /> <br />Under Business From the Floor, the following individuals spoke: (1) <br />Lafayette Jones, 501 Second Street, presented a petition asking for <br />crosswalk signal lights at the intersections of Commonwealth/Market, <br />Fayette/Market, and Church/Market; Council referred this matter to the <br />Transportation Safety Commission for review; (2) Lewis Compton, 1109 <br />Oakgrove Avenue, stated that taxes have increased due to reassessments <br />even though the tax rate has not, discussed the increased number of <br />City vehicles since the time he worked for the City in 1945, and stated <br />downtown had declined due to the 20 minute on-street parking limit; and <br />(3) P. Lester Dalton, 717 Windsor Lane spoke in support of the <br />educational system as an important factor in economic development. <br /> <br />Upon motion, duly seconded and by unanimous vote, Council adopted, on <br />second reading, the following Ordinance No. 93-4 amending Chapter 12, <br />Article III of the City Code regarding exemption and reduction of motor <br />vehicle decal fees for disabled veterans and others: <br /> <br />BE IT ORDAINED by the Council of the City of Martinsville, Virginia, in <br /> <br /> <br />
