T__UESDAY, FEBRUARY 9, 1993 <br /> <br />Upon motion, duly seconded and by unanimous vote, Council adopted the <br />following Resolution regarding the Virginia Department of <br />Transportation's National Highway System Map: <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the Commonwealth of Virginia's Department of Transportation <br />has developed a set of maps depicting the National Highway System (NHS) <br />routes in the West Piedmont Planning District, dated December 23, 1992; <br />and <br /> <br />WHEREAS the Commonwealth has included particular key facilities such as <br />U.S. Routes 220, 29, 58, 265 Bypass and its connectors and other <br />facilities on the NHS; and <br /> <br />WH~EREAS, it is recognized that the aforesaid routes are essential to <br />the provision of an adequate transportation network and support for <br />economic development of this area and the nation and these routes <br />should continue to enjoy federal support; and <br /> <br />WH~EREAS, the Martinsville-Henry County area does not include a <br />designated urbanized area and local officials would like for VDOT to <br />investigate the potential designation and inclusion of an urbanized <br />area on current and/or future versions of National Highway System maps; <br />and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the Martinsville City Council would prefer to have the <br />Commonwealth offer a NHS map to the Federal Highway Administration <br />amended to include extending the NHS designation of U.S. Route 58 <br />beyond the City of Martinsville, Virginia, out to U.S. Route 58's <br />intersection with U.S. Interstate 77 to the west of Martinsville; now, <br />therefore, <br /> <br />BE IT RESOLVED by the Council of the City of Martinsville, Virginia, in <br />regular session assembled February 9, 1993, that it does hereby support <br />the NHS demarcation of routes in the Planning District as developed by <br />the Virginia Department of Transportation, with the addition of the <br />aforesaid amended designation for U.S. Route 58; and <br /> <br />BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that said Council requests VDOT to investigate <br />the potential inclusion of appropriate portions of Martinsville-Henry <br />County as a designated urbanized area on current and/or future versions <br />of National Highway System maps. <br /> <br />Upon motion, duly seconded and by unanimous vote, Council endorsed a <br />Priority Project List for the 1993 Regional Overall Economic <br />Development Program. City Manager Reynolds explained that staff of the <br />West Piedmont Planning District Commission is preparing the annual <br />update for the 1993 Regional OEDP document, and the City's list will be <br />considered in developing the Regional document. <br /> <br /> <br />
