TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 22, 1994 <br /> <br />Council Members <br /> <br />$140 for each regular or special meeting artended, <br />however, not to exceed $6,500 annually; <br /> <br />WHEREAS, Council desires to have the option of exempting itself from <br />compensation for certain special meetings; now, therefore, <br /> <br />BE IT ORDAINED by the Council of the City of Martinsville, Virginia, in <br />regular session assembled November 22, 1994, that it does hereby retain <br />the right to waive any such per meeting compensation for certain spe- <br />cial meetings upon the vote of a majority of the members; and <br /> <br />BE IT FURTHER ORDAINED by said Council, that, an emergency existing, <br />this Ordinance shall become effective immediately upon adoption and <br />remain in effect until amended or repealed by ordinance duly adopted by <br />City Council. <br /> <br />J.79 <br /> <br />Upon motion, duly seconded, and by vote of 4 to 1 (Councilman Crabtree <br />opposed), Council set a public hearing for its December 13, 1994, <br />meeting to consider an amendment to Chapter 1, Section 2 of the City's <br />Charter related to setting tax rates for real estate and personal <br />property. <br /> <br />Upon motion, duly seconded, and by unanimous vote, Council authorized <br />the Police Department to apply for a grant through the U. S. Department <br />of Justice "COPS FAST" program which provides federal funding to hire <br />additional police officers. This program is part of the Federal Crime <br />Bill that provides special opportunities for communities under 50,000 <br />population to receive funding. It was noted that this was just a Pre- <br />Application to determine eligibility and the actual application would <br />come back to Council for approval at a later date. <br /> <br />Sheriff Steve Draper reported that his Department had a new shoulder <br />patch for their uniforms that had been designed by Captain David <br />Wallace, Deputy Ethel Johnson and Deputy Roy Prillaman. He presented <br />each of the Councilmen and City Manager Reynolds with a framed plaque <br />of the new patch. <br /> <br /> <br />
