FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 9, 1994 <br /> <br />A special and duly-called meeting of the Council of the City of <br />Martinsville, Virginia, with Mayor George B. Adams, Jr. presiding was <br />held Friday, September 9, 1994 and Saturday, September 10, 1994 at the <br />Bernard's Landing Conference Center, Smith Mountain Lake, beginning at <br />2:30 P.M. on September 9. All members of Council were present: George <br />B. Adams, Jr., Mayor; L. D. Oakes, Vice-Mayor; Mark A. Crabtree; M. <br />Gene Teague; and Clyde L. Williams. <br /> <br />The meeting was held in the form of a retreat and included the <br />following events/activities: team building exercises (communication, <br />behavior protocol, community relationships, government's community <br />role); a presentation by State Senator Virgil H. Goode, Jr.; a <br />presentation by Dr. Don Lacy of Virginia Polytechnic and State <br />University; and a strategic planning exercise. <br /> <br />The following goals were set: <br /> <br />The City will maximize citizen communications. <br /> <br />-Conduct 4 town meetings annually. <br /> <br />-Actively seek opportunities to discuss community issues with <br />organized community groups. <br /> <br />-Continue the Citizen Newsletter. <br /> <br />-Provide planned public release of position papers on selected <br />issues; e.g., school construction, landfill, etc. <br /> <br />Council will support economic d~elopment in Martinsville and <br />Henry County ~ .... ". <br /> <br />-Provide economic support to the Uptown Revitalization <br />Association. <br /> <br />-Provide economic support to the Patrick Henry Development <br />Council· <br /> <br />-See that the Planning Department investigates incentives and <br />possible legislative changes to support Uptown development· <br /> <br /> <br />
