J.06 <br /> TUESDAY, JUNE 28, 1994 <br /> <br />on this community to assist in resolving the critical economic issues <br />that confront us; and <br /> <br />BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Virginia Department of Economic <br />Development should consider a pilot program to research the impacts of <br />industrial downsizing on our community's traditional manufacturing <br />sector specifically and the Virginia economy in general to develop <br />recommendations related to marketing, human resource development, and <br />industrial diversification as a tool to guide the Martinsville-Henry <br />County community and region, as well as Southside Virginia; and <br /> <br />BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this Resolution be sent to Mr. Wayne <br />Sterling, Director of the Virginia Department of Economic Development, <br />the General Assembly delegation representing the Martinsville-Henry <br />County community, and the Honorable George Allen, Governor of Virginia. <br /> <br />Upon motion, duly seconded and by unanimous vote, Council authorized <br />the Mayor to execute a letter supporting the Virginia Museum of Natural <br />History's "Walk Through Virginia" grant proposal which will involve the <br />Martinsville City and Henry County Public Schools. <br /> <br />The Mayor announced that Council would hold its organizational meeting <br />on July 1, 1994 beginning at 9:00 A.M. in the Council Chambers. The <br />Mayor also noted that the members of Council would be having lunch at <br />the Virginia House restaurant at 12:00 noon on July 1. <br /> <br />Council acknowledged a financial report for the month ending 5/31/94. <br /> <br />Council acknowledged a report on the reorganization of the Police <br />Department. Chief of Police Terry L. Roop outlined certain changes to <br />the Department's organizational structure as a result of fully <br />implementing the community-oriented policing program. The Chief also <br />announced the Department had received notification that its grant <br />proposal to the Department of Criminal Justice Services had been <br />partially funded. The initial grant request was for $78,026, with <br />$65,325 being funded. Chief Roop stated that, while he had not had an <br />opportunity to review the grant award, he believed the awarded amount <br /> <br /> <br />
