TUESDAY,'MAY 24. 1994 <br /> <br />A regular semi-monthly meeting of the Council of the City of <br />Martinsville, Virginia, with Mayor Allan McClain presiding, was held <br />Tuesday, May 24, 1994 in the Council Chamber, City Hall, beginning at <br />7:30 P.M. All members of Council were present: Allan McClain, Mayor; <br />George B. Adams, Jr., Vice-Mayor; L. D. Oakes; M. Gene Teague; and <br />Clyde L. Willjams. <br /> <br />After the invocation, followed by Mayor McClain's cordial welcome to <br />visitors present, Council approved the minutes of its May 10 and 17, <br />1994 meetings as circulated. <br /> <br />Under Business from the Floor, the following comments were made: (1) <br />Thelma Pinkard, 208 Park Street, commended workers of the City and <br />Southwestern Virginia Gas Company for their continuing consideration of <br />the residents of Park Street during the Park Street reconstruction <br />project; (2) Rev. Wayne Prunty, Rivermont Apartments #83, cited a <br />previous request by the residents of Rivermont Apartments for <br />construction of a sidewalk along Fayette Street in the area known as <br />"Koehler Hill"; Rev. Prunty also noted problems with speeding and drug <br />trafficking at the complex; (3) Rev. Jimmie Hawkins, 408 Second Street, <br />read a letter to Council on behalf of the Martinsville-Henry County <br />Ministerial Association which protested the continued transportation <br />and temporary storage of hazardous waste at the old R.P. Thomas <br />trucking terminal located on Fayette Street. Noting that the Planning <br />Commission had conducted a public hearing on the matter and made a <br />favorable recommendation to City Council, and upon motion, duly <br />seconded and by unanimous vote, Council set a public hearing for June <br />14, 1994 to consider adoption of an amendment to Section VI., <br />"Nonconformity", Paragraph J., "Nonconforming Uses Involving the <br /> <br /> <br />
