WEST PIEDMONT PLANNING DISTRICT <br />REGIONAL HIGHWAY TRANSPORTATION PRIORITY PROJECTS <br /> <br />Fiscal Year 1998-1999 <br /> <br />Franklin County: <br /> <br />1) <br /> <br />2) <br /> <br />3) <br /> <br />4) <br /> <br />S) <br /> <br />Support for Interstate 73 planning and construction to connect the Roanoke Valley and points <br />north to Franklin County and the Piedmont Triad and points south is the most important <br />priority bemuse of its economic development potential. <br />Completion of the Route 220 Corridor Study and upgrading of outmoded segments of Route <br />220 since this route is the primary artery and economic lifeline of the county, with special <br />attention and priority given to the section of Route 220 extending from 1/2 mile south of the <br />southero Boonee Mill Town limits to the Roanoke County line. <br />Const.~ction of the Route 40 East project from the Route 220 Bypass to the Route 122/Route <br />40 intersection. <br />Planning and design of the Route 40 West bypass of Rocky Mount and improvement of Route <br />40 West extending to the Fernam community; the bypass would 'start at a point on U.S. 220 <br />north of Rocky Mount and extend around Rocky Mount to a point on Route 40 west of Rocky <br />Mount. <br />At the earliest feasible point, construct improvements, including four-laning, on Route 40 from <br />the intersection with Route 122 east of Rocky Mount over to its intersecUon with U.S. Route 29 <br />at Grstna. <br />Make improvements along Route 122 to Hales Ford Bridge to increase sight distances, widen <br />road shoulders, and straighten curved portions to improve geometrics of route, and renovation <br />or replacement of deteriorating bridge structure. <br />Conduct study of traffic, safety, and geometrics for Route 116 and recommend upgrading <br />projects for the County's consideraUon. <br /> <br />Henry County: <br /> <br />1) <br /> <br />s) <br /> <br />6) <br /> <br />7) <br /> <br />Support for the designing, engineering, funding and construction of Interstate 73 through Henry <br />County which follows a corridor east of the City of Martinsvilla and west of the <br />Henry/Pittsylvanla'County border. <br />Support for the funding and construction of the U.S. Route 58 Improvement Program in arsss <br />where it is currently incomplete. <br />Realignment end improvements on U.S. Route 220 from the intersection of Route 87/Route 220 <br />South to the North CorolinaNirginla line, including the alleviation of hazardous curves in the <br />southbound lanes. This project is essential to tie into the four-lening of U.S. Route 220 currenUy <br />under construction in North Caroline. <br />Realignment of U.S. Route 220 North in ~e vidnity of Draper's Rodst to alleviate hazardous <br />curves, accommodate traffic flows, and develop safer highway conditions. - <br />Support for a safety project to provide improvements to the Route 87/Route 220 intersection to <br />include new acceleration and deceleratlon lanes. <br />Request a Feasibility Study for extension of Commonwealth Boulevard to the west to connect <br />with Route 220 Bypass. <br />Support for the funding of Henry County's Enhancement Project along the Virginia Avenue/220 <br />Corridor to improve pedestrian safety, vehicular safety, and stormwater runoff and visual cladty. <br /> <br /> <br />
