THURSDAY, AUGUST 3, 1995 <br />A special and duly-called meeting of the Council of the City of <br />Martinsville, Virginia, with Mayor George B. Adams, Jr. presiding, was <br />held Thursday, August 3, 1995 at the Prillaman Chemical Company <br />Training Room, Madison Street, beginning at 1:00 P.M. The following <br />members of Council were present: George B. Adams, Jr., Mayor; L. D. <br />Oakes, Vice-Mayor; Mark A. Crabtree; and Clyde L. Willjams. Absent was <br />M. Gene Teague, who was away from the City. <br /> <br />-1.71 <br /> <br />Also present for the first item to be discussed were the following <br />members of the Martinsville City School Board: Judith Matthews, <br />Chairman; James H. Johnson, Jr.; and Bernie F. Gray, Jr. <br /> <br />City Manager Earl B. Reynolds, Jr. and Superintendent of Schools S. <br />Harold Lamm welcomed those present and stated the purpose of the <br />meeting was to continue discussion regarding the construction of a <br />spectator gymnasium at Martinsvi~le High School. Alan Burchette of <br />Dewberry and Davis, reviewed further design work which had been done on <br />the concept since Council's last meeting on this subject and responded <br />to numerous questions from the members of Council regarding specific <br />aspects of the project. F. DeWitt House, Principal of the High School, <br />reviewed the adequacy of the pro3ect from an educational viewpoint. <br />Mr. Lamm noted monies would become available through the Virginia <br />Public School Authority to finance the Middle School Project in <br />November, 1995. In response to a question from School Board Member <br />Johnson, it was stated that the School Division would be developing a <br />capital improvements program, to be presented in the Fall of 1995, <br />which would include improvements to the existing Junior High gymnasium. <br />School Board Member Matthews cited the continuing need to renovate <br />Albert Harris School.
