TUESDAY, MAY 9, 1995 <br /> <br />A regular semi-monthly meeting of the Council of the City of <br />Martinsville, Virginia, with Mayor George B. Adams, Jr. presiding, was <br />held Tuesday, May 9, at Clearview Elementary School, beginning at 7:00 <br />P.M~ The following members of Council were present: George B. Adams, <br />Jr., Mayor; Mark A. Crabtree; M. Gene Teague; and Clyde L. Willjams. <br />Absent was Vice-Mayor L, D. Oakes, who was away from the City. <br /> <br />After the invocation, followed by Mayor Adams' cordial welcome to <br />visitors present, Council considered conducting a 3oint public hearing <br />with the Planning Commission on a request by the City Administration to <br />rezone City-owned property located on Clearview Drive, from R-9 <br />Residential to B-1 Business. The following members of the Planning <br />Commission were present: J. Ronald Ferrill, Fred Nester, Robert <br />Willjams, Thomas Harris, and Donald Smith. Community Development <br />Coordinator Tom Harned presented an overview of the proposed Clearview <br />Business Park, which the rezoning would allow to develop. Mr. Harned <br />described the pro3ect as being positive for the community and <br />environmentally-friendly. Public Works Director Leon Towarnicki <br />presented an overview of the City's proposed realignment of its highway <br />construction plan, which would result in improvements to the <br />intersection of Clearview Drive, Liberty Street, and Stultz Road, as <br />well as possible improvements from the intersection to the proposed <br />Business Park. The Planning Commission then opened their public <br />hearing. Ken Secrest, 307 Clearview Drive, expressed concern that no <br />one from the City had personally asked him his opinions regarding the <br />project. Grace Norman, 305 Clearview Drive, said there currently <br />existed a large amount of noise and truck traffic on Clearview Drive. <br />James Garrett, 933 Glade Street, said nothing about the project had <br />been done in secret, citing the two public meetings at which the <br /> <br /> <br />
