The Sheriff said he would support the construction of <br />additional space, but that he did not want to give Council the <br />impression that any interim solution is a permanent solution. The <br />Sheriff asked Council to make a decision on whether a regional solution <br />will be pursued immediately. <br /> <br />In ~esponse to a question from Councilman Willjams, the Sheriff stated <br />that the City Jail could not offer a work release program because the <br />State Department of Corrections mandates that inmates on work release <br />be housed separately from other inmates. <br /> <br />Vice-Mayor Oakes stated the City is in a position to set a path forward <br />by establishing two approaches--long-term and short term. Vice-Mayor <br />Oakes stated that Council needed to get started on both tracks and <br />needed to set a timeframe for when this issue will be placed on a <br />Council agenda. In response to a question from Vice-Mayor Oakes, <br />Sheriff Draper stated that the majority of persons housed in the City <br />jail are not state inmates. <br /> <br />Mayor Adams said that the regional solution could be discussed with <br />County officials in the joint meeting to be held January 18, 1995. <br />Mayor Adams stated, however, that his-observation is that County <br />officials display total disinterest in this issue at the present time. <br /> <br />Councilman Crabtree asked the City Manager to provide background <br />information on obstacles and issues involved with combinin~ the Ja~X <br />and Prison Farm operations. <br /> <br /> <br />
