WEDNESDAY. DECEMBER 7, 1994 <br />A special and duly-called meeting of the Council of the City of <br />Martinsville, Virginia, with Mayor George B. Adams, Jr. presiding, was <br />held Wednesday, December 7, 1994, at the Walker Fine Arts Building, <br />Patrick Henry Community College, beginning at 5:00 P.M. The following <br />members of Council were present: George B. Adams, Jr., Mayor; Mark A. <br />Crabtree; M. Gene Teague; and Clyde L. Willjams. Absent was Vice-Mayor <br />L. D. Oakes, due to a death in the family. <br /> <br />Also present were the members of the Henry County Board of Supervisors: <br />Sandra Hodges, Chairman; Jack Dalton, Vice-Chairman; Paula Burnette; <br />Sammy Pilson; Simon Spencer; and Francis Zehr. <br /> <br />Upon motion, duly seconded and by unanimous vote, Council and the Board <br />of Supervisors adopted the following Resolution: <br /> <br />WHEREAS, Dr. John D. French was one of the founders of the <br />Children's Medical Center in Martinsville and has treated as <br />many as three generations of families during his almost 40 <br />years of practice in this area; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, Dr. French, along with Dr. Jethro Irby, organized a <br />campaign in 1964 to have area physicians give the oral polio <br />vaccine free "to every man, woman and child in Martinsville, <br />Henry County, and Patrick County;" and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, Dr. French was instrumental in the development of <br />the Henry County-Martinsville Health Department and Memorial <br />Hospital of Martinsville and Henry County, as well as the <br />development of roads in the area through the Martinsville- <br />Henry County Chamber of Commerce's Traffic and Transportation <br />Committee which he chaired; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, Dr. French served with distinction as a member of <br />the Martinsville-Henry County Drug Task Force since its <br />beginning in 1990, being a strong supporter of its programs <br />such as PULSAR, Kid with A Gun - Call 911, and Drug Free <br />School Zones; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, Dr. French served the Martinsville-Henry County Drug <br />Task Force as Chairman of the Law Enforcement Committee from <br />1989 until 1994, Vice-Chairman from 1991 until June 1994, and <br />Chairman from June until October 1994; and <br /> <br />WHEREkS, the community is saddened at the recent death of Dr. <br /> <br /> <br />
