TUESDAY, AUGUST 27, 1996 <br /> <br />A regular, semi-monthly meeting of the Council of the City of <br />Martinsville, Virginia, with Mayor George B. Adams, Jr. presiding, was <br />held Tuesday, August 27, 1996 in the Council Chamber, City Hall, <br />beginning at 7:30 P.M. All members of Council were present: George B. <br />Adams, Jr., Mayor; Mark A. Crabtree, Vice-Mayor; Bruce H. T. Dallas; <br />Elizabeth H. Haskell; and M. Gene Teague. <br /> <br />After the invocation, followed by Mayor Adams' cordial welcome to <br />visitors present, Council approved the minutes of its meetings of <br />August 13 and 15, 1996 as circulated. <br /> <br />Under Business From the Floor the following persons spoke: (1) Deborah <br />Hall, Chairperson of the Courthouse Day Committee, outlined the events <br />and activities of Courthouse Day, an event designed to celebrate the <br />central role the historic old Henry County Courthouse has played in the <br />life of both Henry County and the City of Martinsville since its <br />location on the Square in 1793; Courthouse Day will be held September <br />28, 1996; upon motion, duly seconded and by unanimous vote, Council <br />adopted a Resolution endorsing the Courthouse Day celebration; (2) <br />Thelma Pinkard, 208 Park Street, cited unsightly conditions at an old <br />water tower at the former site of the American Furniture Company on <br />Starling Avenue; City Manager Earl B. Reynolds, Jr. stated City Staff <br />had held discussions with the property owners and it was hoped that the <br />weeds surrounding the tower would be cut by the owners; Mr. Reynolds <br />stated the tower is in compliance with the Zoning Ordinance and the <br />Property Maintenance Code, therefore, the City cannot force the owners <br />to paint the tower; Mr. Reynolds suggested Ms. Pinkard contact the <br />owners and express her concerns regarding this matter. <br /> <br /> <br />
