MONDAY, JULY 1, 1996 <br /> <br />Pursuant to the Charter of the City of Martinsville, Virginia, a <br />special and duly-called meeting of the Council of the City of Martins- <br />ville, Virginia, was held Monday, July 1, 1996, in the Council Chamber, <br />City Hall, beginning at 9:00 A.M. The following members of Council <br /> <br />were present: <br />Gene Teague, <br /> <br />Haskell. <br /> <br /> George B. Adams, Jr.; Mark A. Crabtree; incumbent M. <br />and newly-elected Bruce H. T. Dallas and Elizabeth H. <br /> <br />Martinsville Circuit Court Clerk Ashby R. Pritchett called the meeting <br />to order and, following the invocation by Reverend William A. Shackle- <br />ford, Sr., stated that the purpose of the meeting was to administer the <br />oath of office to the newly-elected Council Members and the election of <br />a Mayor and Vice-Mayor. <br /> <br />Mr. Pritchett administered the oath of office to the newly-elected <br />Council Members--Bruce H. T. Dallas and Elizabeth H. Haskell~-and to <br />the re-elected Council Member--M. Gene Teague. <br /> <br />Mr. Pritchett asked for nominations for the position of Mayor. Council <br />Member Bruce Dallas nominated Council Member Elizabeth Haskell for <br />Mayor, citing her qualifications and experience. Council Member Mark <br />Crabtree nominated Council Member George Adams for Mayor, noting his <br />fine leadership of the Council as Mayor for the past two years. Upon <br />motion, duly seconded and unanimous approval the nominations for Mayor <br />were closed. Mr. Pritchett called for a show of hands for the election <br />of Council Member Haskell (two votes--Council Members Dallas and <br />Haskell) and Council Member Adams (three votes--Council Members Adams, <br />Crabtree and Teague) as Mayor. Mr. Pritchett declared that Council <br />Member George B. Adams, Jr., would be Mayor by a plurality of vote <br /> <br /> <br />
