TUESDAY, MAY 14, 1996 <br />A regular semi-monthly meeting of the Council of the City of <br />Martinsville, Virginia, with Mayor George B. Adams, Jr. presiding, was <br />held Tuesday, May 14, 1996 in the CQuncil Chamber, City Hall, beginning <br />at 7:30 P.M. All members of Council were present: George B. Adams, <br />Jr., Mayor; L. D. Oakes, Vice-Mayor; Mark A. Crabtree; M. Gene Teague; <br />and Clyde L. Williams. <br /> <br />After the invocation, followed by Mayor Adams' cordial welcome to <br />visitors present, Council approved the minutes of its meetings of April <br />23, 24, May 1 and 2, 1996 as circulated. <br /> <br />Under Business From the Floor, Bruce Dallas, 211 Massey Street, <br />suggested the City establish a "Crime Line" program, which would be a <br />private line made available to citizens to report criminal activities. <br />Unlike 911, this line would allow callers to remain anonymous. <br /> <br />A presentation of a retirement stipend was made to Harold Dean Burton, <br />Captain, Fire Department, 1967-1996. <br /> <br />Upon motion, duly seconded and by unanimous vote, Council adopted the <br />following Resolution: <br /> <br />WHEREAS, in 1994 the Governor of the Commonwealth established the <br />Opportunity Virginia program from which the Governor's Regional <br />Economic Development Advisory Council for Region 10 was established, <br />which includes the Counties of Halifax, Henry, Patrick and <br />Pittsylvania, and the Cities of Danville and Martinsville; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the Region 10 Council desires to be incorporated as the <br />Southern Virginia Economic Development Partnership structured to serve <br />as one of eighteen regional economic development marketing agencies in <br />Virginia thereby providing an information base that would put the <br />members of the Partnership on a competitive level with other areas of <br />the Commonwealth; now, therefore, <br /> <br />BE IT RESOLVED by the Council of the City of Martinsville, Virginia, in <br />regular session assembled May 14, 1996, that it does hereby endorse the <br /> <br /> <br />
