MONDAY, MAY 13, 1996 <br /> <br />the formation of a Steering Committee to establish a fund-raising plan. <br />No action was taken regarding the School Division's overall budget. <br /> <br />Council heard a presentation by Alan Burchette, of Dewberry and Davis <br />Architects and Engineers, regarding the proposed improvements to the <br />athletic facilities at Martinsville High School. Mr. Burchette stated <br />his presentation represented the design development stage of the <br />project, or 35% of the architectural and engineering work to be done on <br />the project. The project featured a 2500 seat spectator gymnasium and <br />was estimated to cost approximately 84.7 million. Much discussion <br />centered on the possibility of raising a substantial portion of the <br />funds needed for this project from private donations. It was suggested <br />that a fund-raising consultant be hired to assist in determining the <br />amount of private funds which could be raised for this project. It was <br />decided that this issue would be placed on a future Council agenda for <br />consideration. <br /> <br />Council heard a presentation on improvements to Albert Harris <br />Elementary School. Rayford Smith, of Smith & Beasley Architects and <br />Engineers, along with David Bandy, of Echols Sparger Architects and <br />Engineers, were present to review three possible options for the <br />renovation or replacement of the School. Option A was the renovation <br />of the existing building to house the third, fourth and fifth grades. <br />The total project cost for this option was estimated to be $8,135,000. <br />Option B was the renovation of the existing building to house the <br />fourth and fifth grades and construction of additional classrooms at <br />Patrick Henry, Druid Hills and Clearview Elementary Schools. The total <br />project cost for this option was estimated to be 88,808,000. Option C <br />was the construction of a new facility on the north end of the Albert <br /> <br /> <br />
