WEDNESDAY, JULY 1, 1998 <br />Mayor Teague. Mayor Crabtree then asked Vice-Mayor Teague to take the chair to his right and the other <br /> <br />members of Council chose the chairs they would sit in for the next two years. <br /> <br />Mayor Crabtree then made his remarks by first recognizing former Mayor George B. Adams, Jr. for his many <br />years of dedicated sendee to the community. Mayor Crabtree then thanked Council for their confidence in <br />him, and offered thanks to God for leading him back to Martinsville following his education, and thanked his <br />mother, wife, children, and sister for their love and support. The Mayor then went on to state that the <br />Martinsville community faced many challenges, and that the current Council was ready to move the City into <br />a bright new future. He went on to relate some of the history of the Martinsville and Henry County <br />community and cited the fact that the first two duties of the founding fathers of the community were to <br />finance the building of a courthouse and to establish a public school system. The Mayor then pointed out that <br />a private gi~ of land helped make the first courthouse possible, and that current private girls of land were <br />about to make a number of things possible in the community today. He also noted that the community was <br />still involved in providing for a school system and buildings that provide a high quality education for the <br />community' s children that is the foundation for the area' s economic development efforts. Mayor Crabtree <br />closed by stating that the future was there to be seized by the citizens of Martinsville, that each and every <br />citizen had a part to play in making the community a success, and that he was grateful to the people of <br />Martinsville for allowing him to be a part of this exciting time in the City' s history. <br /> <br />Council Member Terry L. Roop then made his remarks, offering his co.ngramlations to the newly elected <br />Mayor and Vice-Mayor, welcoming back Council Member 9a!las, who had been ill for some time, and closed <br />by stating that he looked forward to working with all the members of Council. He stated that he had always <br />been proud of the Councils of the City, and noted the professionalism that had always been evident. Mr. <br />Roop pledged that although he might not always agree with other members of Council, he would disagree <br /> <br /> <br />
