WEDNESDAY, JULY 1, 1998 <br /> <br />Pursuant to the Charter of the City of Martinsville, Virginia, a special and duly-called meeting of the Council <br /> <br />of the City of Martinsville, Virginia, was held Wednesday, July 1, 1998, in the Council Chamber, City Hall, <br />beginning at 9:00 A.M. The following members of Council were present: Reelected Member Mark A. <br />Crabtree, incumbents M. Gene Teague, and Bruce H. T. Dallas, and newly elected Member Terry L. Roop. <br />Incumbent Member Elizabeth H. Haskell was absent on business away from the City. <br /> <br />Martinsville Circuit Court Clerk Ashby R. Pritchett called the meeting to order and, following the invocation <br />by Reverend Spencer Roberts, stated that the purpose of the meeting was to administer the oath of office to <br />the newly-elected Council Member and the election of a Mayor and Vice-Mayor. <br /> <br />Mr. Pritchett administered the oath of office to newly-elected Council Member Terry L. Roop and to re- <br />elected Council Member Mark A. Crabtree. <br /> <br />Mr. P~tchett then asked for nominations for the position of Mayor. Council Member Teague nominated <br />Mark A. Crabtree for Mayor, citing his qualifications and experience. Upon motion, duly seconded and by <br />unanimous approval the nominations for Mayor were closed. Mr. Pritchett called for a show of hands for the <br />election of Council Member Crabtree as Mayor. Mr. Pritchett declared that Council Member Mark A. <br />Crabtree would be Mayor by a plurality of vote, three-to-one. Mr. Pn'tchett then administered the oath of <br />office to Mayor Mark A. Crabtree, then stepped down and turned the meeting over to Mayor Crabtree. <br /> <br />Council Member Teague for Vice-Mayor. <br />nominations for Vice-Mayor were closed. <br /> <br />Mayor Crabtree asked for nomination for the position of Vice-Mayor.
