TUESDAY, JUNE 23, 1998 <br />A regular, semi-monthly meeting of the Council of the City of Martinsville, Virginia, with Mayor George B. <br /> <br />Adams, Jr. presiding, was held Tuesday, June 23, 1998, in the lower level meeting room of the Fuller <br />Memorial Baptist Church, 1204 South Askin Street, beginning at 7:00 P.M. This was the occasion of <br />Council's quarterly Neighborhood Town Meeting, and a Reception for members of the community was held <br />at 6:00 P.M. in the church, prior to the regular meeting. The following members of Council were present: <br />George B. Adams, Jr., Mayor; Dr. Mark A. Crabtree, Vice-Mayor; Elizabeth H. Haskell and M. Gene <br />Teague. Council Member Bruce H. T. Dallas was absent due to illness. <br /> <br />After the invocation, provided by Council Member Teague, and followed by the Mayor's cordial welcome to <br />visitors present, the meeting began with Council's recognition of out-going Mayor George B. Adams for his <br />years of service on City Council. Mayor Adams was presented with a gift, a plaque with an engraved <br />Proclamation recognizing George B. Adams, Jr. Week in the City of Martinsville, a Key to the City, and the <br />sincere gratitude and abundant well wishes of the Council Members and citizens present. Mayor Adams <br />responded with good humor, humility and gratitude befitting the occasion, and thanked one and all for his <br />years as a Council Member and Mayor, the opportunity to serve, and the trust and support of the citizens of <br />Martinsville. The Mayor closed by recognizing the good work of the City Councils with which he had served, <br />and stated that the City was in good hands, having a capable and dedicated elected body and a competent and <br />committed City staff in place to carry on. <br /> <br />Next on the agenda Council approved, upon motion duly seconded and by unanimous vote, the minutes of its <br />meeting of May 7, 1998, as submitted. <br /> <br />Council' s next item on the Agenda was the conduction of a Neighborhood Town Meeting. This process <br />began with a discussion of key issues brought to the City staff' s attention during the past year. Ms. Brenda <br />Prillaman, Customer Service Representative, provided a comprehensive report which showed that the majority <br /> <br /> <br />
