42 <br /> <br />TUESDAY, MAY 12, 1998 <br /> <br />A regular, semi-monthly meeting of the Council of the City of Martinsville, Virginia, with Mayor George Bo <br /> <br />Adams, Jr. presiding, was held Tuesday, May 12, 1998, in the Council Chamber, City Hall, beginning at 7:00 <br />P.M. The following members of Council were present: George B. Adams, Jr., Mayor; Dr. Mark A. Crabtree, <br />Vice-Mayor; Bruce H.T. Dallas, Elizabeth H. Haskell and M. Gene Teague. <br /> <br />After the invocation, provided by Council Member M. Gene Teague, and followed by the Mayor's cordial <br />welcome to visitors present, Council approved, upon motion duly seconded, and by unanimous vote, the <br />minutes of its meetings of April 22, 1998. <br /> <br />Next on the Council Agenda was recognition of citizens and City employees. The first to be recognized was <br />Mr. Kevin B. Reed, a local citizen serving on the board of the Martinsville Uptown Revitalization Association. <br />Although not present due to an illness in his family, Mr. Reed was recognized for being an Exemplary <br />Volunteer with MURA, and given the Award of Merit from the Virginia Downtown Development <br />Association. Next to be recognized was Mr. Kenneth Shannon of 1506 Mulberry Road, who was the <br />recipient of the Citizen of the Year Award from the Martinsville Police Department. Mr. Shannon was <br />recognized for his work with the Community Oriented Policing division and his interest in and work with the <br />youth of the Martinsville community. Finally, Mr. John A. Poe, Manager of the City Garage, was recognized <br />for his noble and selfless act in having been a living lung lobe donor, thereby helping to save the life of a boy <br />in the local community. Mr. Poe received a standing ovation from those present, and the appreciation of the <br />City Council. <br /> <br />The next item on the Agenda was Business from the Floor. Mr. Hardin Edwards came forward to thank <br />Council for their efforts in trying to pass legislation through the most recent General Assembly that would <br />have required parents of youthful offenders to have to bear the daily cost of their care while incarcerated. Mr. <br />Edwards thanked the Council for their effort, which had been unsuccessful, and asked them to try to move <br /> <br /> <br />
