TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 11, 1997 <br /> <br />Under Item A of the above Executive Session, by unanimous vote, Council entered into a letter of agreement <br /> <br />with Hooker Furniture to accept Hooker Field as a donation to the City of Martinsville. Mayor Adams <br />announced the following pertaining to the acquisition of the said property: the name of the field will remain <br />as "Hooker Field", the City will make certain improvements to the field such as improved restroom facilities, <br />the City will work closely with the Philadelphia Phillies and any other appropriate organizations, and the <br />donation is worth approximately $745,000. Following Mayor Adams' statements, a letter of agreement was <br />signed by Mayor Adams representing the City of Martinsville and E. Larry Ryder, Senior Vice-President of <br />Hooker Furniture. Mr. Ryder made brief comments on the history of Hooker Field. Mr. Ryder stated he <br />sincerely believes the City of Martinsville will make Hooker Field a better place. Mr, Ryder said the <br />contribution was necessary in order for the City of Martinsville to make improvements to the park. On <br />behalf of Martinsville, Mayor Adams expressed sincere appreciation to Hooker Furniture for the <br />contribution. Councilmember Haskell stated future improvements will be positive for Martinsville. <br />Councilmember Crabtree expressed appreciation to Hooker Furniture for past support with their community <br />service pertaining to Hooker Field. Councilmember Dallas stated his desires that the field may later be used <br />for Pony League baseball games. Councilmember Teague also thanked Hooker Furniture for the <br />contribution. <br /> <br />Mayor Adams next opened the meeting to Business from the Floor. Rev. Raymond Gardner, Pastor of <br />Fayette Street's Waller Memorial Holiness Church, addressed Council and addressed his concern for traffic <br />problems on Fayette Street. Speeding drivers are causing problems, especially when traffic is exiting the <br />church parking lot, thus attempting to enter Fayette Street. The problem is more common on Sundays. <br />Councilmember Dallas also supported Waller's view of the problem. City Manager Reynolds agreed to <br />report the problem to Police Chief Dave Edwards for further investigation. Next, City resident Thelma <br />Pinkard addressed Council. Ms. Pinkard requested that Council take action on the request she made on <br />October 28, 1997 at Council's previous meeting pertaining to the ward system petitions signed by local <br /> <br /> <br />
