THURSDAY, OCTOBER 2:5, 1997 <br />Council next considered, in concert with the Board of Supervisors, adoption of a joint Resolution stating the <br /> <br />Martinsville-Henry County community' s preference for the route of the proposed Interstate 73 Highway <br />Project. Following a brief presentation by Assistant to the City Manager Tom Harned, and some discussion <br />of the relative merits of a 5 to 7 mile corridor in the eastern part of the County, east of the City, both City <br />Council and the Board of Supervisors agreed that the eastern route would provide more economic benefit, at <br />the lowest cost with the least environmental impact. Consequently, upon motion duly seconded, and by <br />unanimous vote, both the City Council and the Board of Supervisors approved the following joint Resolution: <br /> <br /> RESOLUTION <br /> <br />49 <br /> <br />WHEREAS, Inters irate 73 will be the primary growth engine for the Martinsville and Henry County economy, <br />promoting employment, capital investment, travel, tourism, recreation and other contributions to the <br />improvement of economic and educational conditions in our area; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS,. Interstate 73 will fuel the growth of the Martinsville-Henry County area for generations to come <br />and will define the population and development growth corridors in the development of the region; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the location of Interstate 73 in this area is absolutely critical to the orderly and healthy <br />development of Martinsville-Henry County and the surrounding area, to help bring more industry, more jobs, <br />higher paying jobs, growth in the tax base and a better standard of economic living to our area; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, Interstate 73 should be located and routed in a manner that will bring the greatest benefit to the <br />greatest number of people, and serve as a connector for the industrial parks and employment centers in Henry <br />County and the City of Martinsville promoting the orderly movement of employees, goods and services; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, Interstate 73 can provide an eastern connector for the main traffic arteries linking the <br />Martinsville-Henry County area to the region it serves including the Figsboro Road, Barrows Mill Road, <br />Chatham Road, Danville Road and the Eden Road providing opportunities for key economic development <br />projects that will result in economic stability, expansion of the tax base and job growth; now, therefore, <br /> <br />BE IT RESOLVED by the County of Henry and the City of Martinsville that both governing bodies, <br />assembled in special session on October 23, 1997, do hereby recommend and support the final location of <br />Interstate 73 in a new road corridor routed to the East of the City of Martinsville. <br /> <br />Council next considered, in concert with the Board of Supervisors, a joint Resolution supporting the <br />expedited engineering and construction of improvements to the Liberty Street, Clearview Drive, and Stultz <br /> <br /> <br />
