TUESDAY, OCTOBER 14, 1997 <br />business matters identified in the motion convening the Executive Session were heard, discussed, or <br /> <br />considered during said Session. <br /> <br /> Following their return to open meeting Council took no action on items A., B., and C. discussed in Executive <br />~"'Session. <br /> <br />On item D. from Executive Session Council took the following action: Upon motion duly seconded, and by <br />unanimous vote, Council authorized the City Manager to sign a contract with the joint venture firm of Ffith <br />Construction/D. H. Griffith for the demolition and removal of the R. P. Thomas Trucking facility on Fayette <br />Street and the old Martinsville Hospital on Starling Avenue, for a total turn-key cost of $497,568, said <br />project to include removal of all asbestos and all underground storage tanks, and the rough grading and <br />seedingoftheclearedlots. Councilmember Haskell congratulated City staff for their accomplishment of a <br />very favorable contract for the City, and stated that this is the new Martinsville, in the process of re-inventing <br />itself. Vice-Mayor Crabtree stated that representatives of the Virginia Museum of Natural History should <br />take note of the City's actions on this project. Councilmember Teague noted that this is exciting for the <br />community, turning two of our worst sites into two of our best ones. <br /> <br /> On item E. from Executive Session Council took the following action: Upon motion duly seconded, and by <br /> <br /> unanimous vote, Council authorized the City manager to sign a contract with Lovell Logging Company to <br /> <br />/---, harvest timber from the site of the Clearview Business Park property, in preparation for the development of <br /> that site, located on Clearview Avenue. Proceeds from sale of all timber harvested are to be divided evenly <br /> between Lovell Timber Company and the City of Martinsville. <br /> <br />With regard to the actions on the above Executive Session items, Vice-Mayor Crabtree commented that the <br /> <br />City is taking a balanced approach to revitalizing the community, which is the key to success.
