TUESDAY, JULY 8,1997
Consideration was given to the adoption of Council's schedule of

Neighborhood Town Meetings for Fiscal Year 1997-98. Upon motion, duly
seconded and by unanimous vote, Council adopted the following schedule

for the meetings in question:

September 23, 1997
December 9, 1997
March 24, 1998
June 23, 1998

Martinsville Middle School, Theater Room
Martinsville High School Cafeteria
Albert Harris Elementary School Library
Virginia Museum of Natural History

In other matters not on the agenda, the following items were discussed:
(1) Councilmember Teague requested that a work session be scheduled for
Council for the purpose of discussing real estate tax relief options,
based upon a recent letter provided by City Manager Reynolds on that
subject. Council agreed to hold this discussion at a work session to be
held at 11:00 A.M., Thursday, July 24, 1997. (2) Vice-Mayor Crabtree
noted favorable comments about the local area and fishing in the Smith
River in the July 1997 edition of Virginia Wildlife Magazine. {3) Mayor
Adams stated that in a recent letter from the Urban Partnership it was
noted that although the City of Martinsvilla continues to support the
efforts of the Partnership, Martinsvilla and several other cities will
no longer provide financial support to the organization. Mayor Adams
also noted that a recent article in Virginia Business Magazine pointed
out the tremendous increase in the number of cellular towers, and that
the Martinsvilla Planning Commission should soon consider an ordinance
on this issue. The Mayor also noted that a recent communication from
the State Department of Education is soliciting comments on school
standards, and that there will be hearings in several locations around
the state to provide opportunities for comment.
