TUESDAY, JUNE 10, 1997 <br />A regular, semi-monthly meeting of the Council of the City of <br />Martinsville, Virginia, with Mayor George B. Adams, Jr. presiding, was <br />held Tuesday, June 10, 1997 in the Council Chamber, City Hall, <br />beginning at 7:00 P.M. All members of Council were present: George B. <br />Adams, Jr., Mayor; Mark A. Crabtree, Vice-Mayor; Bruce H. T. Dallas; <br />Elizabeth H. Haskell; and M. Gene Teague. <br /> <br />J, 79' <br /> <br />After the invocation, followed by Mayor Adams' cordial welcome to <br />visitors present, Council approved the minutes of its meeting of May <br />27, 1997 as circulated. <br /> <br />Council conducted a public hearing to receive candidates for <br />appointment to the Martinsville City School Board for two positions, <br />with three-year terms beginning 7/1/97. Mayor Adams stated that <br />Council received interest in appointment from four individuals: James <br />H. Johnson, Jr. of 1507 White Oak Court, William A. Shackleford, Sr. of <br />405 Third Street, Naomi Hodge-Muse of 611 First Street, and T. Jerry <br />Womack of 200 Fourth Street. The Mayor noted that according to the <br />State Code, Council could not make appointments to the School Board <br />until at least seven days after the public hearing. Mayor Adams then <br />declared the public hearing open, with the following individuals <br />speaking: (1) Amy Christine Hodge Ziglar spoke in support of the <br />appointment of Naomi Hodge-Muse; (2) James H. Johnson, Jr. asked <br />Council for reappointment to the Board and also spoke in favor of the <br />reappointment of William A. Shackleford, Sr.; (3) William A. <br />Shackleford, Sr. asked Council for reappointment to the Board and spoke <br />in favor of the reappointment of James H. Johnson, Jr.; (4) T. Jerry <br />Womack asked Council for appointment to the Boar~; (5) Naomi Hodge-Muse <br />asked for appointment to the Board; and (6) Lafayette Jones, 501 Second <br /> <br /> <br />
