TUESDAY. MAY 13. 1997 <br /> <br />stated there was no reason to increase taxes; (2) Nancy Carter, 1112 <br />Cherokee Trail, requested full funding of the School Board's proposed <br />budget; (3) Lafayette Jones, 501 Second Street, after reviewing a <br />number of tax and fee increases imposed by the City over the last <br />several years, asked Council to decrease the proposed tax increases <br />contained in the budget and to delete the proposed water service fee <br />increase; (4) James Crigger, 1122 S. Askin Street, spoke in favor of <br />the proposed budget and the projects contained therein; (5) Ralph <br />Draper, 816 Keel Street, stated Fire Department personnel were <br />overworked and suggested two additional firefighter positions be added; <br />(6) O. Randolph Rollins, representing the Tultex Corporation, supported <br />the proposed tax increases and stated that the first priority for the <br />City should be education in order to have a trained work force ready to <br />attract high-tech jobs; (7) Thomas Leath, 740 Indian Trail, requested <br />that Council ensure that every expenditure had been minimized; (8) <br />Lewis Compton, 1109 Oakgrove Ave.; stated he did not object to a $.12 <br />increase in real estate taxes; (9) Lynn Ward, 1610 Meadowview Lane, <br />spoke in support of full funding of the School Board's proposed budget; <br />(10) Betty McDowell, 735 Indian Trial, cited the hardship of increased <br />taxes on senior citizens; (11) Jeffrey Cunningham, 603 Forest Street, <br />stated the percentage increase of taxes was excessive and questioned <br />how much of the School Budget was devoted to athletics; (12) Juanita <br />Cunningham, 603 Forest Street, stated that the elderly would be hardest <br />hit by the proposed tax increases; Mayor Adams noted the real estate <br />tax relief program for the elderly and disabled; (13) Mary Trimpey, of <br />Henry County, expressed opposition to the proposed tax increases; (14) <br />T. G. Balabanis cited the need for Martinsville to have a pro-business <br />attitude; (15) Barbara Jamison, 904 Hunting Ridge Road, stated the City <br />needed to be responsible for cost control; (16) Sherman Dutton stated <br /> <br /> <br />
