TUESDAY, APRIL 8, 1997 <br />Pittsylvania, as well as the Cities of Danville and Martinsville. In <br />response to a question from Council Member Haskell, Mr. Davenport <br />stated that Martinsville and Henry County needed to work together in <br />order to compete for economic development prospects. Mr. Davenport <br />stated that working together toward developing a Joint industrial park <br />and industrial shell buildings were projects that would enhance City <br />and County economic development. Several Council Members expressed <br />appreciation to Mr. Davenport for his presentation. <br /> <br />Council considered recognition of National Volunteer Week. Council <br />Member Haskell noted that work on creation of a Volunteer Action Center <br />was continuing through a Volunteer Center Planning Committee. A <br />survey, prepared through the efforts of the Committee, was distributed <br />in which community organizations reported volunteer needs. Council <br />Member Haskell introduced the following individuals who had worked with <br />her on the Volunteer Center initiative, all of whom made remarks <br />supporting the establishment of a Volunteer Action Center: Peggy <br />Cross, a private citizen who assisted with the survey; Jean Beam, <br />retired Volunteer Coordinator for Henry County; Frank Dilworth, retiree <br />and local volunteer; Nancy Harris, Asst. School Superintendent for <br />Instruction; and Bud Sedwick, Director for the Comprehensive Services <br />Act. Mayor Adams read a Proclamation he had signed declaring April 13 <br />- 19, 1997 as National Volunteer Week in the City. Mr. Reynolds noted <br />Henry County's interest in this issue and stated that County <br />Administrator Sidney Clower had wanted to attend the Council meeting, <br />however, he had a scheduling conflict. <br /> <br />Council considered adoption of a Resolution authorizing the City <br />Manager to prepare and file an application for a 1997 Planning Grant <br /> <br /> <br />
