M

" ~

City Council
Agenda Summary

Martinsville

Meeting Date:
Item No:
Department:
Issue:

March 13,2007
3.

Community Development

Consider a request from the Town of Stuart, Virginia, that the
City of Martinsville Redevelopment and Housing Authority
assist them in their application for a Community Development
Block Grant from the Virginia DHCD for the Uptown area.

Summary:

In 1998, the Town of Stuart obtained a CDBG grant to revitalize the Downtown
area. They are now interested in seeking a grant for Uptown. The City's
Redevelopment and Housing Authority provided a letter for the Town's application
stating their agreement to serve as the Town's Authority in any contested property
acquisition. With that particular project, everything went off smoothly and there
was no need to get Martinsville involved in the project. DHCD requires this type of
letter if there is a redevelopment effort and they cannot fund a downtown project
without a redevelopment element.

The Town is now preparirtg to submit another application, this time for the
Uptown area, and is requesting the City's support as before.

Attachments:

Letter

Recommendations: Motion to authorize letter of support
