<br />January 23, 2007 <br /> <br />Dr. Barry Dorsey, Executive Director of the New College Institute gave an <br /> <br />update on the College and indicated there are now 74 students enrolled. He <br /> <br />also expressed his thanks for the support from the City in the beginning as the <br /> <br />College was being established and for the City's continued support in the <br /> <br />fu ture. <br /> <br />Council next considered the adoption of a Resolution recogmzmg <br /> <br />participants in the "Race to Books" promotion at the Martinsville Speedway in <br /> <br />October. The Mayor recognized Speedway President Clay Campbell, Public <br /> <br />Relations Director Mike Smith and Sheryl Agee with the United Way's Success <br /> <br />by 6 program and read the following Resolution: <br /> <br />RESOLUTION <br /> <br />WHEREAS, Martinsville is recognizable world-over to racing fans because of Martinsville Speedway, <br />built upon the dream of Clay Earles and his heirs and continued in the present day by International <br />Speedway Corporation; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, Martinsville Speedway is an active corporate citizen in the communities of Martinsville and <br />Henry County, supporting Martinsville Mustangs baseball, funding United Way and a variety of charities, <br />and serving as an active participant in economic development activities critical to the area economy; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, during the October 22, 2006 Subway 500 NASCAR Nextel Cup race, Petty Cheerios 43 <br />Dodge driver Bobby Labonte participated in a "Race To Books" promotion sponsored by Cheerios and <br />nonprofit organization First Book; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, by completing all 500 laps of the Subway 500, Bobby Labonte generated a generous <br />donation of 21 ,500 books to reading programs in Martinsville and Henry County; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the 21,500 books will be distributed by Success By 6, the YMCA and Boys & Girls Clubs <br />of Martinsville and Henry County, ensuring that the books reach children on a variety of social, economic <br />and development levels; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the estimated monetary value of the books donated in the community exceeds $220,000; <br />and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, Martinsville Speedway hosted an event January 17, 2007, to accept the donation; now, <br />therefore <br />
