Council also received rODorts from the Martinsville-Henry <br /> <br />County Airport Development Corporation, which has been in the process of negotiating <br /> <br />'with the City for use of part of the City's flairportll tract as a landing field, on the <br /> <br />....,-, <br /> <br />development and/or need for developing airport facilities in this area. <br /> <br />A ttorney William rr. Alexander, as a citizen and on bahali of himself and other interested <br /> <br />citizens residing in the western part of the City, presented the following petition <br /> <br />requesting the appointing of Negro policemen for West End: <br /> <br />~:~ <br />gtj <br />rr <br />v> <br /> <br />= <br /> <br />Your petitioners, registered and voting citizens of Martinsville, Vircinia, <br />respectfully represent as follows: <br />1. Trlat the present police force of lfiartinsvilJ.e, Virginia, is doing as <br />fine a job in maintaining order as can be expected under the circumstances; and <br />2. That yom' petitioners are not simply interested in one particular <br />section of the City, but in the City as a whole; and <br />3. That no City is any better than its worst lXlrt; and <br />4. That there is an imrr.ediate need in the West End Section of Mart:L'1.sville <br />for patrolmen, not merely passing through, but stationed; and <br />5. That the purpose could best be served if Ne[~o police were appointed; and <br />6. That other Cities, na,mely, Roanoke, Norfolk, Winston-Salem and many more <br />have tried the use of Negro police and the trials have been very successful; and <br />7.
