72

TUESDAY
.....

JULY J2, 195$

The Planning Commission held several public he~s in this matter and while
several objections were heard to tb3 proposed rezoning, the Commission teels
the basic idea of neighborhood shopping centers is proper, and where needed
and proper~ planned, are desirable. The Commission, in its investigations of
this petition, learned that the property in question had been set aside on a
master plan for the development of le.nier Farms, Inc., as earJ3r as 1938 and
bas been public knowledge since that time. '!he majority of the property
owners questioned in that general area were aware at' the plans as proposed
by Lanier Farm, Inc., at the time of their purchase.

While the need tor a shopping center at this location is not evident at the
present time, the Commission feels that sonstime in the future this area will
grow to such proportions that the need for a neighborhood shopping center may
justify development of one and that norr is the proper time to plan for its
development.

'!'he Camnission respectfully submits the above reconmendations for Council's
furtber conSideration.

Very truly yours,
Irvirg 11. McGhee, Secretary
Planning Commission

In response to a letter of June 30, 1955 from the state Water Control Board (J. 1..
Hamrick, Jr., Engineer) requesting a supplementary report to Council's report of
June 28th regarding authorization for preparation of plans and specifications for

local sewage treatment facilities, Council indicated that it is aware' -both of the
seriousness of the Water Control Board's June 6th directive and the need for such

facilities here in Martimville but that it could not at this time specify any given

date as to when such authorization will be given because of the demand o/Council's

attention to many other important and pressing problems and projects, sore of which
must be coordinated wi tb. the proposed sewage treatment project.

Council agreed to complete its viewing of various City streets on the afternoon of
Thursday, July 14, 1955 preparatory to selecting a limited number for which it will
authorize curb-oand-gutter construction during the current fiscal year if requirements

of the City's current policy governing such construction are lOOt.
