350 TUESDAY APRIL 12, 1955 The regular semi-monthly meeting of the Council of the City of Martinsville, Virginia, with Mayor R. S. Hodnett presiding, was held in the Council Chamber, City Hall, on Tuesday, April 12, 1955, at 7:30 P.M., with the follo"l'r1.ng members being present: Mayor and Councilman R. S. Hodnett; and Councilmen C. P. Craig and B. H. Hill. Councilmen W. T. Turrer and J. R.Nalker were absent because of illness. Minutes of the regular Council meeting held March 22, 1955, were approved as read. Pursuant to duly-advertised public notice, Council conducted a public hearing on a proposal, as recormnendeeJ. by the Planning Commission as follovrs, to rezone to liB-I Businessfl all of the property lying on the south side of Church street between Ellsworth Street and Cleveland Avenue back to the north line of the proposed extension of Chestnut Street: Honorable Mayor and City Council City of Martinsville, Virginia Gentlemen: The Planning Commission of the City of Martinsville, at several of its meetings, has considered a request referred to tJ1em by City Council from the Piednont Trust Bank involving the rezoning of the back portion of its property lying at the corner of Ellswomth and Church Streets, from A-I Residential to B-1 Business. In the past, the Co~nission has followed a policy of adhering to a maximum depth zoning for the B-1 Business classification of 150 feet. The nature of the request of the Piedmont Trust Bank, involving a greater depth zoning than strict adherence to this policy perr_its, the Planning Commission felt that perhaps at this time a portion of its thoroughfare plans should be developed. As a result of this thinking, the Planning Commission had tentative plans dra7ffi for the extension of Chestnut Street and subsequently held a public hearing on the zoning and future Chestnut Street location on March 23, 1955. At this meeting, the Planning Commission voted unanimously to make the follovJing recommendation to Council concerning this matter: That all of the property lying on the south side of Church Street between Ellsworth Street and Cleveland Avenue be zoned as f1B-l Businessll back to the north lire of the proposed extension of Chestnut Street, wrlich north line lies apIJroximately 396 feet south of Church Street on ~alsl'vorth Street and 374 feet on Cleveland Avenue. The north line of Chestnut street is indicated on a set of plans in the Traffic and Planning Engineer's office and is drawn in blue pencil.
