~34

TUESDAY

MAY 25. 1954

it is suggested that the Committee request Council:
(1) to perIni t the Commi ttee to examine individual income
tax returns of Martinsville licensees L~ediately after they
are filed with the Commi ttioned of the Revenue in May;
(2) to permit a representative of the Committee to examine
corporate income tax returns of Martinsville licensees
immediately after they are filed with the State Tax
Commissioner in May. The Governor has power to grant
such a request from Council, and if proper safeguards of
secrecy are guaranteed has in the past permitted income
tax returns to be used for such statistical and research
purpo se s .

Although Attorney Young indicated that he had planned soon to present

additional data on behalf of the local manufacturers, in view of the fact

that a new study of local license tax conditions is forthcoming, he

further indicated that his clients would await completion of said study.

Pursuant to duly-advertised notice authorized by Council, Council was

advised that only one bid-from Rev. J. G. Houck in the amount of $50.00-

had been received for a small triangular portion of property at or near the

intersection of Lavinder Street with the new Route 220 Thoroughfare. Council

unanimously rejected said bid but indicated that it would entertain a higher

offer, whereupon }'JX. Houck, who was present, verbally offered the sum of

$375.00 for said piece of property. This offer was referred to City Manager

}~thewson for his consideration and recommendation.

By unanimous action of the Council the present entire membership of the

City Planning Commission, as follows, was reappointed to said Planning

Commission for four-year terms beginning July 1, 1954:

R. S. Brown, Sr.
Leon Globman
i.lalker H. Graves
John J. Hartley
Ben W. Via
J. Frank Wilson.
