<br />34 <br /> <br />TUESDAY <br /> <br />OCTOBER D, 1953 <br /> <br />The Council received and acknowledged the following letter from the Laymen's <br /> <br />league of St. Paul's Episcopal Church: <br /> <br />We, the members of the LaJrman's leaGue of St. Paul's Episcopal Church, <br />Martinsville, Virginia, recommend and urge you to appoint a qualified <br />Negro citizen to the vaca.ncy on the Planning and Zoning Commission. <br /> <br />This we ask, knowing that you have the welfare of the whole city at <br />heart, and we know that, if possible, you will consider this vmrthwhile <br />request and act favorably upon it. <br /> <br />Council, upon motion which was duly seconded and unanimously carried, appointed <br /> <br />:Mr. Ben W. Via to menbership on the Planning Commission for an unexpired term <br /> <br />ending June 30, 1954. <br /> <br />In its final action of the meeting, Council received through City Manager Mathewson <br /> <br />a recent report of inspection of the City's Prison Farm, as made by a representative <br /> <br />of the State Department of Welfare and Institutions, which report reflected the <br /> <br />usual efficient and capable operation of the Prison Farm by Superintendent Robert <br /> <br />King. Council took this occasion to compliment and com~end 1w. King, asking the <br /> <br />Clerk to convey by letter an expression of Council's appreciation. <br /> <br />Council was adjourned. <br /> <br /> <br />, Clerk of Council <br />
