<br />lE <br /> <br />TUESDAY <br /> <br />OCTOBER 13, 1953 <br /> <br />The regular semi-monthly meeting of the Council of the City of Martinsville, Virginia, <br /> <br />with Mayor R. S. Hodnett presiding, was held in the Council Chamber, City Hall, on <br /> <br />Tuesday, October 13, 1953, at 7:30 o'clock P.M. ~th the following members being present: <br /> <br />Mayor and Councilman R. S. Hodnett, and Councilmen C. P. Craig, W. T. Turner, and <br /> <br />J. R. Walker,--Councilman D. H. Goode being absent. <br /> <br />Minutes of the regular Council meeting held September 22, 1953 and of the special <br /> <br />--- <br /> <br />Council meeting held October 7, 1953, upon being read, were approved. <br /> <br />Representing the Ma.rtinsville Junior Chamber of Corrunerce, its President, Mr. R. M. <br /> <br />Simmons, Jr., appeared before Council and summarized his Club's recent investigation <br /> <br />and findings concerning the proposed fluoridation ofilie City's water, as a result <br /> <br />~~ <br />i~ <br />i <br /> <br />of which the Junior Chamber of Commerce strongly recommended that fluoridation of <br /> <br />water in Martinsville be approved by the Council. Supporting this recommendation <br /> <br />were the endorsements of nineteen local civic clubs and other organizations; <br /> <br />however, it was noted that a few objections to this proposal have been registered <br /> <br />by a few local individuals. The Council then went on record as comJnending the <br /> <br />Junior Chamber of Commerce for their very intensive investigation and for their <br /> <br />very efficient presentation. The Council, also, indicated that it would hold a <br /> <br />public hearing on this matter at a very early date, the time and place of which <br /> <br />will be duly advertised. <br /> <br />The Council, next, went on record as approving and adopting the City Planning Conuni- <br /> <br />ssion's recommendation of August 4, 1953 as to the rezoning of South Bridge Street <br /> <br />from the intersection of the Dye Plant Road south to the City's corporate limits; <br /> <br />however, the Council proposed to effect this recommendation in stages, considering <br /> <br />first the petition of record to rezone the Fralin, Lester, and Tuggle properties <br />
