<br />1 <br /> <br />JULY 23, 1953 <br /> <br />TUES DAY <br /> <br />--- <br /> <br />After receiving a report from City 11anager Mathewson ani Vice-Mayor Craig on the <br /> <br />recent Federal-State-Local Governmental Functions meeting sponsored by the Public <br /> <br />Affairs Conunittee of the Virginia State Chamber of Coml1erce and :181d in Richmond, <br /> <br />Virginia on July 23, 1953, Council unanimously approved the 10Vf bid of $480,933.hl <br /> <br />submitted by McDowell & Wood, Contractors, of Salem, Virginia, to the Virginia <br /> <br />Department of Highways for t.'rJ.e construction of the proposed Route 220 Thoroughfare. <br /> <br />- <br /> <br />Council, then, requested City ManaGer Mathewson to inqu::rc of the Department of <br /> <br />Highways as to the possibilities of widening River Hill Road from the 19h6 <br /> <br />corporate limits to the present corporate limits, making this project a part of <br /> <br />the present Route 220 Thoroughfare project. <br /> <br />Council, next, aclmowledr;ed a notice of application to the State Corporation <br /> <br />~- <br />i~ <br />i <br /> <br />Commission field ,'rith said Commission by the firm of Hiatt & Williams, doing <br /> <br />business as Fairystone Bus Lines, for certificate to operate a bus service over <br /> <br />certain proposed routes. <br /> <br />In a final action, Council received and acknowledged the follovang letter from <br /> <br />Hr. Frank Hodges, of County-City Laundry Corporation, regardir.g the local busi- <br /> <br />,- <br /> <br />ness license tax im~}osed on local laundries a::1d clFJ-cleaninr; establishments. <br /> <br />Earlier this year the vvriter appeared before you as spokesman for a <br />majority of the dryclcaning an:l lalmdering firms in Martinsville, asking for <br />an adjustment in the license rate applied to these industries to brim; the <br />license tax paid by us to a fair and equitable oilsis as compared with other <br />types of busimsses and industries in the city. As the result of this <br />hearing, a cOr:1rGittee W3.S appointed by the Mayor to study the facts in the <br />case and make a recommendation back to the Council. Four members of the <br />corrmlittee are city of:'icials with the V'lriter liein;; the fifth :rrember. <br /> <br />A majority of the connni ttee members recently voted to take no action <br />on the rnatter L-l question until the services of Dr. Rowland Egger of the <br />Bureau of Public Administration of the University of Virginia could be <br />obtained. Inasmuch as it probably will be several weeks yet before Dr. <br />EgGer can meet with the cOIT'JTlittee, if at all, this matter is still pending. <br />
