<br />1 <br /> <br />TUES DA Y <br /> <br />JULY 28J..J:953 <br /> <br />The regular semi-monthly meeting of the Council of the City of Martinsville, <br /> <br />Virginia, with Mayor R. S. Hodnett presiding, was held in the Council Chamber, <br /> <br />City Hall, on Tuesday, July 28, 1953, at 7:30 P.M., the following members being <br /> <br />present: Mayor and Councilman R. S. Hodnett, and Counci1men C. P. Craig, D. H. <br /> <br />Goode, and J. R. Walker, -- Councilman W. T. Turner being absent. <br /> <br />-- <br /> <br />Minutes of the regular Council meeting held July ll~, 1953, upon being read, <br /> <br />were approved. <br /> <br />Before beginning its regular order of business, noting the presence of visitors, <br /> <br />Council received a verbal petition from a Group of citizens residing on Sylvan <br /> <br />Ridge that the local Rapid Transit Company be required to furnish or provide <br /> <br />~.:~ <br />~~ <br />i <br /> <br />bus service for the Sylvan RidGe area; however, Council advised the delegation <br /> <br />that inasnmch as there is no franchise now in effect with the Rapid Transit <br /> <br />C or;Jpany the Council has no power to regulate or control the bus service rendered <br /> <br />by the Rapid Transit Company. <br /> <br />In taking up its regular order of business, Council, first, adopted the following <br /> <br />c- <br /> <br />resolution authorizing City Manager Mathewson to execute on behalf of the City <br /> <br />an agreement between the City of Martinsville and the Appalachian Electric Power <br /> <br />Company, 8.160 as follows: <br /> <br />WHEREAS it is the mutual desire of the City of Martinsville and the <br />Appalachian Electric Power Company that the said Appalachian Electric <br />Povrer Company supplement the electric power it is now providing to the <br />City of Martinsville and, also, that the said Appalachian Electric <br />Power Company provide to the City two sources of supply; and <br />
