<br />l24 <br /> <br />TUESDA Y <br /> <br />JUNE 30~ 1953 <br /> <br />The regular semi-mont~ meeting of the Council of the City of Martinsville, <br />Virginia, held in lieu of the meeting scheduled for June 23, 1953, am with <br /> <br />Mayor R. S. Hodnett presiding, was held in the Council Chamber on Tuesday, June <br /> <br />30, 1953, at 7:30 P.M., all members, as follows, being present: Mayor and <br /> <br />Councilman R. S. Hodnett, am Councilmen C. P. Craig~ D. H. Goode, W. T. Turrer, <br /> <br />and J. R. Walker. <br /> <br />Minutes of the regular meeting held June 9, 1953, and of the special meetings held <br /> <br />June 15, 1953, June 19, 1953, and June 25, 1953, upon being read, were approved. <br /> <br />In accordance with duly advertised public notice, a public hearing was declared <br /> <br />and conducted by the Council on a proposed budget for the City of Martinsville for <br /> <br />the fiscal year ending June 30, 1954, as placed on first reading June 15, 1953, <br /> <br />during the course of which hearing the following persons addressed the Council: <br /> <br />(a) Attorney John Hartley, representing local theater management, who <br />requested a reduction in local amusement admission taxes as applied <br />to adult admissions or, preferably, the elimination of local amusement <br />admission taxes altogether; <br />(b) w. B. Muse, who asked for information concerning the proposed Albert <br />Harris School athletic field; <br />(c) Taylor Finney, who requested the construction of water lines for <br />Beaver Street; and <br />(d) J. H. Saunders, who requested a water line for Katherine Street. <br /> <br />There being no other visitors to be heard, Councilman J. R. Walker moved for the <br /> <br />adoption of the budget a s recommended and placed on first reading with the <br /> <br />exception that his motion included the transferring of $20,000 from the Garage- <br /> <br />Shop construction account of the General Fund to the Street construction account <br /> <br />for the widening of Bridge Street from Church Street to Chestnut Streets. Upon <br /> <br />Councilman W. T. Turner's second, and upon a recorded vote which was unanimous, <br /> <br />Council adopted said budget as presented and amended. <br />
