<br />90 <br /> <br />TUESDAY <br /> <br />APRIL _28. 1953 <br /> <br />The regular semi-monthly meeting of the Council of the City of Martinsville, <br /> <br />Virginia, with Vice-Mayor C. P. Craig presiding in the absence of Hayer <br /> <br />R. S. Hodnett, was held in the COlillcil Chamber, City Hall, April 28, 1953, <br /> <br />at 7:30 P.M., the following members being present: Vice-Hayor and Councilman <br /> <br />C. P. Craig and Councilmen D. H. Goode, W. T. Turner, and J. R. Halker. <br /> <br />Minutes of the regular Council meeting held April 14, 1953, upon being read, <br />were approved. <br /> <br />In considering the proposed Fire Code for the City, as presented recently to <br /> <br /> <br />the Council, Council called for a Public Hearing on same at the Council's next <br /> <br /> <br />regular meeting to be held May 12, 1953. <br /> <br />The petition filed \rlth Council at its April 14, 1953 meeting by local launderL~g <br /> <br /> <br />and dry cleaning firms, requesting a reduction in the local license tax rate applied <br /> <br /> <br />heretofore and currently to such establishments, was carried forward, also, to the <br /> <br />May 12th (1953) meeting for further consideration at that time. <br /> <br />In reviewing a notice from the state Corporation Commission that the Lee Telephone <br /> <br /> <br />Company, which serves Martinsville, has filed application with the Corrrrnission for <br /> <br /> <br />permission to increase telephone rates in Martinsville, subject to a public <br /> <br /> <br />hearing in Richmond on May 21, 1953, COlillcil, as representatives of the local <br /> <br />citizens and public, issued a cordial invitation to officials of the Lee <br /> <br /> <br />Telephone Company to meet with the Council at its next regular meeting to be held <br /> <br /> <br />May 12, 1953 to answer such inquiries as citizens may present at t.l1.e COlillcil <br /> <br />meeting about the proposed rate increases. <br /> <br />In acknowledging with appreciation a letter from Honorable W. R. Broaddus, Jr., <br /> <br />Hember of the Virginia General Assembly, in which letter Hr. Broaddus called <br />
