<br />WHEREAS, Brooks R. Leavitt, duly-appointed agent for the City of
<br />Martinsville-Cornmonwealth of Virginia-Federal Government in the
<br />matter of obtaining purchase options for properties required for
<br />the proposed Route 2A> Thoroughfare right-of-vray, has officially
<br />reported to the Council of the City of Martinsville that he has
<br />exhausted all means within the limitations of his authority,
<br />wi thout success, towards acquiring certain properties frcm the
<br />J. W. Cheshire Estate and the J. W. Hairston Estate needed for
<br />said Route 220 Thoroughfare right-of-way; now, therefore,
<br />
<br />BE IT RESOLVED by the Council of the City of Martinsvil1e, on
<br />behalf of the governments hereinabove mentioned, in regular
<br />meeting assembled this twenty-fourth day of March, 1953, that
<br />it doth hereby appoint William F. Stone as its attorney in this
<br />matter and doth herein authorize said William F. Stone to bring
<br />and conduct condemnation proceedings to acquire in the name of
<br />and on behalf of the City of Martinsville said certain properties
<br />from the said J. W. Cheshire Estate and the said J. W. Hairston
<br />Estate for the purpose hereinbefore stated.

<br />Council was also informed by Mr. Brooks E.. Lean tt, above-mentioned right-
<br />
<br />of-vray agent that the City has already obtained possession of some eleven
<br />
<br />of the twenty-five houses Which are located on the proposed Route 220
<br />
<br />Thoroughfare right-of-way and that disposition of such houses, as they are
<br />
<br />acquired, should be made; whereupon, COUIlCil asked City Nanager Mathewson
<br />
<br />and y~. Leavitt to proceed with plans, such as advertising for bids, etc.,
<br />
<br />to dispose of said houses.

<br />Through lvIr. S. E. Shumate, 704 Grattan Road, this City, who represented
<br />
<br />property owners residing on said Grattan Road, Council received a written
<br />
<br />petition for the construction by the City of curb-and-gutter on Grattan
<br />
<br />Road. This petition was referred to City Manager Mathewson.
<br />
<br />Under date of t~rch 13, 1953, Mr. J. Clyde Hooker, Jr., Activities Chairman,
<br />
<br />and Mr. Art Stanley, Field Executive, expressed their appreciation, on behalf
<br />
<br />of the local Boy Scouts and the Boy Scout Council, of the cooperation given
<br />
