<br />TUES DAY <br /> <br />FEBRUARY 24., 1953 <br /> <br />...- <br /> <br />- <br /> <br />BE IT ORDAINED by the Council of the City of Martinsville, Virginia, in <br />regular meeting assembled February 24, 1953 that any person, firm, or <br />corporation operating a business and/or practicing a profession in the <br />City of Martinsville on which a license tax is charged, whose principal <br />office and/or business is located in the City of Martinsville, and who or <br />which is compelled to discontinue said business or profession because of <br />the fact that the ovmer or operator of said business, or person practicing <br />a profession, is called into or enters into active military service for <br />the United States Government durir1.g the current Korean war emergency, <br />shall be entitled to a rebate on the license tax paid by said person, firm, <br />or corpcrcttion for the license year ending April 30, 1953 or for any <br />succeeding license tax year during said Korean war emergerey, which rebate <br />shall be prorated on a monthly basis for the tax year in which the business <br />or profession is discontinued but in no case shall any part of any minimum <br />license tax be refunded and, furthermore, said refund shall not be paid <br />until after such business or profession has been discontinued for the <br />aforestated reason and until after said owner or operator or person <br />practicing a profession has been accepted into active military service. <br /> <br />An emergency existing, this ordinance shall be in effect from the date <br />of its passage and shall be effective for the duration of said Korean <br />war emergency. <br /> <br />-~- <br />il <br />i <br /> <br />Upon being informed by City Manager Mathewson that there might be some delay in <br /> <br />beginning the Mulberry Street curb-and-gutter project already authorized, Council <br /> <br />approved the Fairy Street project for next-in-line construction if the Mulberry <br /> <br />project is delayed. <br /> <br />Upon motion by Councilmen Craig, seconded by Councilman Turner, and unanimously <br /> <br />.""~- <br /> <br />carried, Council authorized and directed City Attorney William F. Stone to <br />.x <br />u" <br />represent and defend the City's Board of Zoning Appeals in the~being brought <br /> <br />against said Board by P. S. Ford concerning the property known as the "Chime <br /> <br />Clock Filling StatioIT' located at the corner of Church and Bridge Streets. <br /> <br />In a final action of the meeting, Council joined with the City's citizens in <br /> <br />congratulating the local public school system ani the City School Board upon <br /> <br />being nationally recognized by the Freedom Foundation of Valley Forge, being <br /> <br />one of five school s,ystems throughout the United States so recognized, for <br />
